TIFF 2009 - Day Two

It happened...I saw the movie...you know, that movie that will stay with me...year after year, one I'll always remember...my new Dirty Pretty Things, In America, Gone Baby Gone....the movie is The Secret in Their Eyes...but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The first movie I saw today was the Informant! Ya, its as fun as the commercials make it out to be. You pretty much laugh from beginning to end at the absurdity of it all. Matt Damon plays the buffoon really well, with just the right mix of stupidity, innocence and secrets. Its simply a movie about a high-level executive at a Corn Processing Company (#44 in the Fortune 500) who stumbles into being an Informant on price fixing. Everything isn't as simple as you first think and it has plenty of twists, turns, lies and ridiculosity....I highly recommend.

And my second film, The Secret in Their Eyes an Argentinean film that's a throw back to the great movies of old. All the perfect elements are there; thriller, intrigue, romance, tragedy, political drama, great friendship and comedy. The film is set in two times, the late 90s and the mid 70s. The lead Benjamin Esposito, played by the friggin INCREDIBLE actor Ricardo Darin, is a law clerk haunted by a case from his past. He worked a case where a woman was murdered and many obstacles stand in his way as he tries to solve and close the case. All the right foreshadowing is there, you see something, put it to the back of your mind, and use it when the time is right. You're right there with Benjamin, figuring out the pieces of the puzzle, all the while experiencing the love, friendship and loss along with him. I can't begin to write how the movie will make you feel or how the solutions all cause you to question the actors choices....because the film is so powerfully and perfectly acted, exceptionally written, and superbly directed, you really need to see it for yourself. An outstanding A+. How will any other movie compare?!
